A dynamic penalty function method for the solution of structural optimization problems

چکیده
This paper presents an adaptation of an existing dynamic trajectory method for unconstrained minimization to handle constrained optimization problems. This is done by the application of a dynamic penalty parameter procedure to allow for the constraints. The method is applied to structural optimization problems that involve the determination of minimum weight structures of trusses and frames, subject to stress, displacement, and frequency constraints, under various prescribed load conditions. Because structural problems, in general, require detailed finite-element analyses to evaluate the constraint functions, the direct application of the trajectory method, requiring updated information at each step along the path, would be expensive. This problem is overcome by the successive application of the trajectory method to approximate quadratic subproblems that can be solved economically. The comprehensive new approach is called the DYNAMIC-Q method. The method is successfully applied to a number of truss andframe problems and is found to be both reliable and easy to use.

SEQUENTIAL PENALTY HANDLING TECHNIQUES FOR SIZING DESIGN OF PIN-JOINTED STRUCTURES BY OBSERVER-TEACHER-LEARNER-BASED OPTIMIZATION
Despite comprehensive literature works on developing fitness-based optimization algorithms, their performance is yet challenged by constraint handling in various engineering tasks. The present study, concerns the widely-used external penalty technique for sizing design of pin-jointed structures. Observer-teacher-learner-based optimization is employed here since previously addressed by a number ...
متن کاملEffects of Probability Function on the Performance of Stochastic Programming
Stochastic programming is a valuable optimization tool where used when some or all of the design parameters of an optimization problem are defined by stochastic variables rather than by deterministic quantities. Depending on the nature of equations involved in the problem, a stochastic optimization problem is called a stochastic linear or nonlinear programming problem. In this paper,a stochasti...
متن کاملParticle Swarm Optimization for Hydraulic Analysis of Water Distribution Systems
The analysis of flow in water-distribution networks with several pumps by the Content Model may be turned into a non-convex optimization uncertain problem with multiple solutions. Newton-based methods such as GGA are not able to capture a global optimum in these situations. On the other hand, evolutionary methods designed to use the population of individuals may find a global solution even for ...
متن کاملSingle Facility Goal Location Problems with Symmetric and Asymmetric Penalty Functions
Location theory is an interstice field of optimization and operations research. In the classic location models, the goal is finding the location of one or more facilities such that some criteria such as transportation cost, the sum of distances passed by clients, total service time, and cost of servicing are minimized. The goal Weber location problem is a special case of location mode...
متن کاملOptimization of Meshless Local Petrov-Galerkin Parameters using Genetic Algorithm for 3D Elasto-static Problems (TECHNICAL NOTE)
A truly Meshless Local Petrov-Galerkin (MLPG) method is developed for solving 3D elasto-static problems. Using the general MLPG concept, this method is derived through the local weak forms of the equilibrium equations, by using a test function, namely, the Heaviside step function. The Moving Least Squares (MLS) are chosen to construct the shape functions. The penalty approach is used to impose ...
